Career guidance and support is our promise that while you're looking after your clients, we're looking after you. Quite often that means standing in an open doorway of one of our Partners or Senior Associates (and yes, they're almost always open) seeking guidance, getting feedback, asking advice or getting counseled on something to do with a case or transaction.
Because you're generally going to have your head wrapped around a case or a deal, we have a dedicated team of career development partners. The Career Development and Recruiting Committee (CDRC) comprises one partner from each of the six regional sections. We also have professional development managers who are former practicing lawyers. Everyone works together to keep your career on track. They look at every Associate in all our US offices to ensure you're getting the training you need when you need it, that you're being appropriately staffed and challenged, have a manageable workload and are getting valuable career guidance. They're also there to listen to your needs, suggestions, and concerns.
The Firm recently adopted an Associate Career Framework. The aim of the Framework is to:
- Provide each Associate with an indication of the skills and behaviors expected of you and allow you to manage your own development.
- Outline what is required to be a successful lawyer by defining what "excellent" looks like at each career level, regardless of business section or practice group.
The Career Framework, bi-annual evaluations, CDRC and professional development managers provide Associates with comprehensive career support.
